One of Sutton’s movers and shakers is making waves on Saturday night television, with a starring role in BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Professional  dancer Joanne Clifton, who is paired up with Radio One DJ Scott Mills, has made it through to week six of the competition.

The show takes a celebrity and partners them up with an established dancer, who takes them through the motions in preparation for a Saturday night performance.

Each week the public phone in and vote for their favourite act.

The two teams with the least votes then have a dance-off, with the judges deciding who stays and who goes.

Ms Clifton, who moved to the borough in August, said: “Scott is the greatest student.

“He listens to everything, and will have a go at anything, but on the show we have always been in the bottom two.

“We need the public to vote for us.

“In our practice sessions he is actually very good, but I think in the show he succumbs to nerves.”

Ms Clifton has had a colourful career in ballroom dancing, winning the World Professional Ballroom Showdance Championships in Merano, Italy, last year.

The 31-year-old grew up in Waltham, in Lincolnshire, and was taught to dance by her parents.

In 2000 she moved to Bologna, Italy to join Team Diablo, which is the biggest dance school in Europe.

She made the transfer from amateur to professional in 2011.

This year is the first time she has appeared in Strictly Come Dancing.

She said: “I haven’t been in Sutton long, but I really love it here. I have had the chance to look around the high street and see some of the shops, it is a lovely little place.”

Scott Mills may not be top of the leader board on Strictly, but his cheeky smile has got the public voting for him week after week.
Along with his army of Radio 1 listeners, he’s also got a catalogue of celebrity fans backing him on the show. From Robbie Williams and The Hoff, to his radio buddy Grimmy, Scott’s definitely not short of support. But who’s next in his list of celeb contacts for the next time he needs to call a friend?

‘I’ve had a message from Liam from One Direction which is quite good. I think a Royal would be quite good. I think that’s the only thing after a member of One Direction. I’m slightly worried that I’m going to run out of people,’ Scott told us.

Scott needn’t worry! No matter what, he’s got the support of his partner-in-crime from his radio show, Chris Stark, who’s been pretty keen about getting Scott through each week, and has got a campaign running for him. #‎DropItLikeItsScott!

Chris says: ‘I was quite annoyed by the judges this weekend actually.’

‘He said he’d heckle!’ Scott jumped in.

‘I would if I got to come and watch a show. Someone needs to say something!’ Chris added.

Aw! Chris has got your back Scott! And no surprise either that he feels that way, after some of the harsh comments that he and his dance partner, Joanne Clifton, have received from the judges. But was he suprised by them?

Scott says: ‘Yes, 100%. But that’s the thing about Strictly, you cannot call it. You don’t know who’s going to vote, and even people they think would feel they are safe, they don’t.’

But every week, he gives it his all – even when he’s dressed as a crab and dancing to The Little Mermaid! – and gets to come back to the safety of his radio show.

‘What’s been quite nice is I go there, I do it, and I do it to the best of my ability – but when I go to Radio 1 I’m then like “Oh this is my job, I’m actually quite good at this!” And it kind of grounds you a bit if you’ve got awful comments, or you’ve had a bad day at training.’

With the other celebs in the show starting to get 7s and 8s from the judges, who’s Scott eyeing up as his competition?

‘I don’t know really – what’s happening now is, all the boys are getting really good. And my worry is I’ll be left behind. Particularly Mark Wright has really come on, and Thom Evans is good.

‘Simon Webb has always been good. But Thom and Mark are the ones to beat because they have come on leaps and bounds.’

Despite all this though, Scott is totes loving being on the show, and getting his dancing shoes on every week – and is feeling fitter than ever!

He says: ‘I feel strong here [shoulders] and here [biceps]. Next week I’m doing the charleston, which is literally hopping around for like six hours a day.’

We can’t wait to see Scott hopping around – and now we know Liam can’t either!

Scott Mills revealed he had found unlikely support from Cheryl Fernandez-Versini as he prepares for his next performance on Strictly Come Dancing.

The BBC Radio 1 DJ said the singer – a judge on rival ITV show The X Factor – has offered her words of support, and told him to ignore judge Craig Revel Horwood’s cutting comments.

“Cheryl wished me the best of luck and told me to go out there, do my best and don’t listen to Craig. I don’t know (if she watched my performances) but she knows I’m doing it,” the 40-year-old presenter said.

He added: “I asked her to give a message to the judges to not be mean to me. She agreed and asked if it was Craig who had been mean.”

Scott, whose dance partner is Joanne Clifton, is the bookmakers’ favourite to leave the BBC show this weekend, after he came bottom of the scoreboard last week. William Hill are offering odds of 4/7 on him to go, with Judy Murray at 11/8.

The DJ failed to win judges Craig, Darcey Bussell, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli over with his American Smooth. Craig told him: “You’re exception to the rule that anyone can dance. I was worried about your health and safety when you ran like a banshee.”

Scott admitted: “Saturday night was pretty tough to take. I thought they were really harsh last week, too harsh. I can take criticism but even I felt quite wounded by it. But by Sunday, I felt like it is what it is. I tried my best and there’s nothing more I can do.

“This process is so fast, you just have to leave what happened last week behind pretty quick. You’ve pretty much got three days to learn something you’ve never done before so that consumes you, and you don’t have much time to dwell on it.”

Scott is hoping his Charleston, performed to Tommy Steele’s Flash Bang Wallop, will impress the judges this weekend.

“I had no idea what the Charleston was so I had to Google it. Once we started training, I realised it was a load of fun. I’ve just laughed all through the week. It’s been a really positive week,” he said.

“The dance is not serious at all because it’s a silly song, but it’s not a full-on comedy like the crab in Under The Sea. I’m a photographer trying to woo a lady. It’s very cheeky – there’s a lot of winks and looks to the camera.”

Even if the judges fail to be won over, Scott hopes he can survive through to the Halloween episode.

“I’m not going to win this competition, but I would like to do Halloween because it is going to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever dressed up in,” he teased. “If I get through, I have an incredible outfit and maybe even new hair!”

Comments (0) STRICTLY Come Dancing duo Joanne Clifton and Scott Mills made it through to week six of the BBC show despite being left second bottom on the leaderboard on Saturday night.

Joanne, from Waltham, and the Radio 1 DJ performed the Charleston to Flash Bang Wallop by Tommy Steele, but picked up only 19 points from the judges.

But it was former professional rugby player Thom Evans and professional partner Iveta Lukosiute who were given the chop after a dance-off with pop star Simon Webbe and Kristina Rihanoff.

Joanne’s brother Kevin and Frankie Bridge scored 32 points, the fourth best score of the weekend, with their foxtrot to Daydream Believer by The Monkees.

Kevin’s fiancee Karen Hauer and dance partner Mark Wright shot to the top three with their Samba to That’s The Way I Like It by KC And The Sunshine Band.

Keith Clifton, dad to Kevin and Joanne, said: “It has been a tremendous weekend. We still have our Three Amigos riding into the sunset. That is three out of 11 which is better than three out of 15. They are still going well.

“Mark was tremendous with his Samba, which was very high class from a technical point of view.

“Scott has also shown a lot of character after the verbal bashing he got. He is starting from a different place to the others. His personal progress is wonderful to see.”

Keith said they were all looking forward to the Halloween weekend.

Joanne’s dance partner Scott Mills was praised by judges for his best dance so far.

Len Goodman told the duo who have struggled so far in the series: “It was fun, it was entertaining and you gave it plenty of welly. What I like is that you came back and gave it your all.”

And there was praise for Kevin and Frankie, with veteran judge Goodman telling them: “You floated across that floor like butter on a hot crumpet.”

Bruno Tonioli praised the duo on a “proper foxtrot” while Craig Revel Horwood described the dance as “enchanting”.

Next week is the spookiest event in the Strictly calendar, as spiders, witches, broomsticks and ghosts haunt the Strictly ballroom in the Halloween special which will air on Saturday at 6.30pm, with the results show on Sunday at 7.20pm on BBC One.

Comments (0) THE CURTAIN has gone up on the Grimsby Dance Festival.

With the area’s three Strictly Come Dancing stars, Kevin and Joanne Clifton and Karen Hauer to inspire them, hundreds of dancers will be taking to the stage at Cleethorpes Memorial Hall throughout the week.

Organiser Beccy Burns said she is keen to complete research into the history of the dance festival which has involved generations of dancers.

Some say it began in the Sixties, though others believe it started in the Fifties.

Whatever its beginnings, the Grimsby Dance Festival in 2014 is the most competitive, with standards of performance getting higher each year.

As an eight-year-old Caitlin Gledhill, of Clee Dance Academy, said she had loved every one of her performances on the festival stage.

Now 14, the Humberston Academy pupil is training in London’s West End each Sunday.

At the Festival she won the Impromptu class with a salsa-style dance.

Her first trophy of the competition was the reward for more than five weeks of preparation.

She thanked her dance teachers Bev Wade, Rebecca Mooney and Lisa Asher for helping her reach the peak of her career so far.

Caitlin said: “I always love it. I like to make people laugh and entertain audiences.”

She thanked her parents Lee and Sonja Gledhill for taking her to London to gain the experience of working with professional performers who she hopes will enable her to start a career in London’s West End.

Caitlin said: “I really want to work in the West End but also want to be like my teachers, especially Jacqueline Wilson of Blaze theatre group.”

She won one of the 18 different categories of dance which are split into different age groups.

Beccy Burns welcomed adjudicator, Angela Whittle to the Festival.

Beccy said: “We are all feeling brilliant and totally energised and excited for the start of the week.”

She and husband David Burns have a dedicated team of volunteers including Lorraine and David Wright in the Box Office and Cheryl Collins and Shiralee O’Brien backstage.

Comments (0) IT was another great night of dances on Strictly Come Dancing but perhaps it is fair to say that Grimsby’s very own Clifton siblings had mixed fortunes.

Kevin Clifton and Frankie Bridge got the off to a great start with their opening Cha Cha to Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen.

The VT in the build up to their dance showed Grimsby train station and the pair eating some fish and chips in Cleethorpes, and Kevin was also presented with a birthday cake.

On the dancefloor Frankie wore a blue fringed dress and Kevin had a matching shirt, it was the first dance of the night and the first standing ovation.

After their dance, head judge Len said: “You came out and and went for it full on.

“Kevin, happy birthday and I tell you what, with Frankie you’re going to have many happy returns on Strictly Come Dancing.”

Bruno said he the loved the “cheek” in the routine and that Frankie was a “good dancer”.

Of Frankie, Craig said: “You have the most expressive hands, they really are beautiful.”

All judges gave the pairing an 8, meaning they had a combined total of 32 which was not a bad way to follow up being top of the leaderboard last week – placing them third overall.

Karen Hauer and former TOWIE star Mark Wright were up straight afterwards with their Quickstep to Tiger Feet by Mud.

Both were elated afterwards with Mark relieved that he did not forget any steps.

He said: “I’m just so glad I did it – I did it.”

Karen was clearly emotional and proud of her partner.

Bruno referred to Mark as a “white night” and said the dance had intricacy and “flourish”.

But Craig said Mark had “flat hands when out of hold”.

Darcey commented on how much he had improved and said his development was “very impressive”.

Len said: “I liked it overall; plenty of energy early on.”

Craig gave the pair a 7, same as Darcey and Len but Bruno went one better and gave Mark and Karen an 8 – a total of 29, which sits them comfortbaly in the middle of the pack.

They did an American Smooth to Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Scott clearly struggled with his steps and looked relieved when it was all over.

Bruno said instead of it being an American Smooth, it was more like an “American tragedy” and that he lost count of how many times Scott went wrong.

Craig stuck the knife in deeper saying that Scott was the exception to the rule, that everybody could learn to dance.

Darcey said she saw improvements in his “top line”.

Craig gave Scott and Joanne a 2, which was very harsh; Darcey gave them a 5, Len said 4 and Bruno held up 4 also – a total of 15, meaning Scott and Joanne need all the public support they can get.

Who will survive the dreaded dance off? Are Kevin and Frankie assured of safety? Will Scott have to dance again to stay in the show?

Scott Mills has said performing on Strictly Come Dancing last weekend wasn’t as terrifying as it had been previously.

Dancing the samba to The Little Mermaid track ‘Under the Sea’ as part of Movies Week, Mills was dressed as a crab.

In an interview with Zoe Ball on It Takes Two, Mills said: “I’ll tell you why it was such fun, apart from the outfit, the whole thing and the song which is kind of a kids’ song. It was the first time I hadn’t felt absolutely terrified.

“It’s the third time I’ve done it and you get used to what it’s going to feel like, with the audience and the pressure of the judges.

“When you first do it in the first couple of weeks, I honestly can’t remember it.”

Continuing to speak about the performance, he clarified that he was a little bit nervous before he started.

The DJ said: “I’m behind a massive bit of fake coral and any second I’m gonna have to kind of pincer my way across the stage.

“It was this impending doom, but I did it.”

The reaction to the comedy routine has been so positive that his radio producer now wants to start a campaign to turn the routine into the next dance craze.

“Yeah, he wants it to become the new ‘Gangnam Style’,” Mills said, “and there’s various gifs going around today which repeats for seven seconds of me doing this [mimes pincer dance move] across the stage”

Mills and Joanne Clifton will be performing the American Smooth on this weekend’s show.

The final titles have rolled on  movie night,  the bright lights of Hollywood are a distant memory for the dancers, but don’t worry there is a bit of Bonnie to celebrate this week.

The songs and dances for week four of Strictly Come Dancing have been revealed and DJ Scott Mills and his partner Joanne Clifton will be performing the American Smooth to Total Eclipse of the Heart by Welsh songstress Bonnie Tyler.

The list also reveals there will be a bit of Destiny’s Child, Tina Turner and even Elvis Presley.

So, will Frankie and Kevin top the leaderboard again with their Cha Cha Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen, and we have high hopes for Jake Wood’s jive to Elvis Presley’s All Shook Up.

Judy Murray is the favourite to waltz out this weekend with bookings listing her at the 6/4 favourite to go. It’s 9/4 Tim is eliminated or 3/1 Scott’s comedic dances come to a grinding halt. Let’s hope Bonnie can save him!

Frankie and Jake are fancied as 5/2 chances at the top of the outright betting.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “There’s been more than a few double faults in Judy’s performances and the odds suggest the judges will call her out next.”

Comments (1) STRICTLY stars Kevin Clifton and Frankie Bridge danced their way through Grimsby yesterday on a flying visit.

The duo, who are dancing together on this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing, were seen filming in a variety of locations in the town for this weekend’s show.

They were spotted by shocked passers-by at Grimsby Town Railway Station, before taking in a spot of fish and chips by the promenade in Cleethorpes and visiting Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

Adam Wood, from Bradford, was visiting the resort with his young child when he came across Kevin and Frankie by the promenade.

He tweeted the picture saying: “Nice to see you Kevin and Frankie. Thanks for the picture and good luck for Strictly.”

Fellow Twitter user Larissa Cowen added: “Much excitement! Bumped into Kevin Clifton and Frankie Bridge filming at Grimsby Town Railway Station. Yay for Strictly!”

It comes after the duo topped the judges’ leaderboard last week on what his dad Keith described as one of Strictly Come Dancing’s best ever weekends.

They scored the first ten of the series – awarded by guest judge Donny Osmond – as they racked up an impressive 45 points on Saturday night’s show.

It was enough to ensure their safe passage through to this weekend’s programme, alongside Kevin’s sister Joanne Clifton and his fiancee Karen Hauer.

This is not the first time Kevin – or “Kevin from Grimsby” as he has come to be known – has been to Grimsby to film for the hit BBC show.

He visited 14 children from Clifton’s Dance Academy last year with his celebrity dance partner Susanna Reid. The children were left starstruck as the duo – who made it to last year’s final – performed one of their dances.

The pair travelled to town by train – Kevin from London and Susanna from Manchester – accompanied by a Strictly film crew.

The visit was supposed to be hush-hush, but Kevin let the cat out of the bag by posting on social networking website Twitter that he was visiting his home town.

Kevin, from Waltham, also showed TV presenter Susanna where he used to dance – the studios in Abbey Road, Grimsby, and where he used to play snooker at Cue World.

Kevin also celebrated his 31st birthday on Monday in style, having dinner with Frankie and fiance Karen, as well as meeting up with former dancing partner Susanna.
