What’s On TV tonight? Highlights are Strictly Come Dancing featuring Kevin Clifton, X Factor starring Hayden Leeman, Doctor Who and Ryder Cup

What’s On TV tonight? Highlights are Strictly Come Dancing featuring Kevin Clifton, X Factor starring Hayden Leeman, Doctor Who and Ryder Cup

Watch him battle it out for a place in Mel B’s boys category on ITV 8-9.20pm.

But if dancing is more your thing, we still have Kevin Clifton and his partner Frankie from The Saturdays to watch on Strictly Come Dancing, as well as his fiance Karen Hauer and former Towie Mark Wright.

Joanne Clifton made her Strictly debut last night with Radio1 DJ Scott Mills, but it wasn’t as successful as we might have hoped. We’re sure Joanne will be able to polish him!

Strictly is not going head-to-head with X Factor tonight, as it’s on BBC1 from 7pm to 8.30pm.

But what it does do is push Doctor Who back to 8.30pm … much to the dismay of parents of some youngsters.

And if sport is your thing, there’s highlights from The Ryder Cup, being staged at Gleneagles, on BBC from 8.30pm to 10.30pm.

Joanne Clifton and Scott Mills performing on tonight’s show

Comments (0) Grimsby’s Joanne Clifton and her dance partner Scott Mills are propping up the Strictly Come Dancing leader board after tonight’s opening show of the series.

They were among six couples to take to the dance floor this evening.

The other nine – which include Joanne’s brother Kevin and his fiancée Karen Hauer – will perform tomorrow night.

Joanne and the Radio One DJ received just 16 points from the four judges for their cha cha to Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ.

Despite receiving a good luck message from the pop star before the show, Scott put in a stilted performance which was panned by the judges.

Asked by presenter Tess Daly if Scott’s performance had “rocked his world”, the normally ebullient Len Goodman replied: “Not particularly. It was the sort of dance that would be better on the radio. Your footwork was poor and you didn’t have a lot of hip action.

“Having said that, another one of Robbie Williams’ tracks is Let Me Entertain You and you came out and entertained everybody.”

Bruno Tonioli described the dance as “robotic, neurotic, hypnotic” and added: “You’re intentions were very good. The entertainment value was there.”

Craig Revel Horwood said: “A zimmer frame has more movement than I saw there. You were lifting your knees sky high like you were having a tantrum.”

Darcey Bussell said: “You brought a cheeky connection between you both. Maybe this cha cha would have been better in a nightclub not a ballroom dance floor. But what I was impressed with is you came out, you attacked it and you sold it.”

Eastenders actor Jake Wood topped the leader board with 28 points, closely followed by TV presenter Caroline Flack and pop star Pixie Lott on 27.

Bargain Hunt’s Tim Wonnacott and tennis coach Judy Murray both scored 18.

Although the dancers are being scored by the judges, no couples will be eliminated in the first week of the competition.

Follow Kevin and Karen’s progress on Twitter @GrimsbyTel from 7pm tomorrow and see the website for reaction.

You’re a natural dancer… fantastic groove’: Strictly Come Dancing’s Caroline Flack dazzles the judges but EastEnders’ Jake Wood takes early lead

She may have been the first to take to the floor in the series 12 opener of Strictly Come Dancing on Friday, but that certainly didn’t have an impact on Caroline Flack and her impressive Cha Cha.

The TV presenter wowed in a gold, fringed dress as she performed an upbeat routine to Can You Feel It? alongside professional partner Pasha Kovalev.

Despite the 34-year-old being told she was a ‘natural dancer’, it was fellow competitor Jake Wood who went straight to the top of the leaderboard with an astonishing 28 points.

Spinning around: Despite the 34-year-old being told she was a ‘natural dancer’, it was fellow competitor Jake Wood who went straight to the top of the leaderboard

The first live show, however nerve-racking for the stars, saved them from a public vote and scores were instead carried forward until next weekend.

After Caroline’s routine, she faced the first grilling of the new season by the judges, however escaped without too much criticism.

Head judge Len Goodman told her: ‘You were fizzy and effervescent. There was one little mistake, but that was terrific.’

Bruno Tonioli commented: ‘You were a flash of gold. I have to say your arms are very expressive -your my kind of girl. Great debut… Very promising.’

Craig Revel Horwood added: ‘You had musicality and rhythm. You’ve got into a fantastic groove. Some of your lines need a little bit more finesse, but you did a fantastic job.’

Meanwhile Darcey Bussell said she was a ‘natural dancer’. She scored a six from Craig and three sevens, totaling 27 overall.

It was a passionate routine for Jake Wood and Janette Manrara, who performed a Tango to Toxic by Britney Spears.

The former EastEnders actor – who got a standing ovation afterwards – escaped the glitz in a black suit and green tie, before being told by Craig: ‘I’m impressed actually. Strong frame… you took the lead and it was full of intent. One to watch.’

Darcy commented: ‘It was cool. You looked so comfortable. I was shocked by the drama’, while Bruno added: ‘You are a brute aren’t you. Strong, tough… see you next week.’

Before adding: ‘I would like to see your softer side.’

It was sevens from all the judges, giving him the highest score of the night by just one point.

Meanwhile, second to dance was Tim Wonnacott, who started off from behind an auctioneer’s before also taking on the Cha Cha to Shop Around by Captain and Tennille.

The 61-year-old appeared to have enjoyed the routine, but Bruno was unable to stop laughing afterwards. He said: ‘I have to appreciate your confidence. You embraced the camp-ness. Your technique is difficult to define… it’s very personal.’

Craig commented: ‘I didn’t enjoy it. It looked like you were wearing a soiled nappy. It was all getting a bit Julian Clary.’

Darcey told the Bargain Hunt regular: ‘That was so entertaining. It was cheeky, fun and surprisingly… entertaining’, while Len said: ‘Your footwork wasn’t too clever, but your feet are a long way from your heart. You came full with personality so well done to you.’

He was given a three by Craig, and fives from the other judges, totaling 18 overall.

It was a much more serene affair for Judy Murray and Anton Du Beke, who Waltzed to Mull Of Kintyre by Wings.

Dressed in sparkly plaid, the star was told that her nerves were coming through a little too much by Darcey. ‘You shook a little bit all the way through’, she said.

Len, who joked that he’d seen a little too much of Anton thanks to his kilt, told him: ‘This is a very difficult dance to do, and I thought you did very well.’

Craig was far from pleasant at first, saying: ‘I thought you were dragging Judy around. Your arms need serious attention. Your posture is appalling. You came out and gave it a go, so well done.’

Mother of Tennis ace Andy received a three from Craig, a four from Darcey, a six from Len and a five from Bruno, placing her second from the bottom.

Scott Mills – who was dressed in a sparkly red top – danced the Cha Cha to a very apt Rock DJ by Robbie Williams with partner Joanne Clifton.

The Radio 1 presenter – who said he found the whole thing really stressful –  certainly didn’t rock Len’s world on the night. He said: ‘Your footwork was poor… there was no rhythm. But you came out and you entertained everyone.’

Bruno said: ‘You’ve got the club vibe going but it didn’t travel down to the feet’, while Darcey said: ‘You came out and sold it.’

Craig was by the far the most cruel, telling Scott: ‘The zimmerframe has more movement then what I saw there. You were lifting your knees sky high as if you were having a tantrum. Not a dance for you.’

He gave him a miserable two points, while Darcey awarded a four, and Len and Bruno a five. He got a total of 16, placing him at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Pixie Lott was the final celebrity to dance on the night with new pro Trent Whiddon, who danced the Jive to Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off.

Bruno told the singer: ‘I was loving the 60s look. Great performance and another great debut’, while Craig said: ‘I really enjoyed it. The time and energy was great. There was a slight hesitation, but it was great.

She was awarded sevens from Craig, Len and Bruno as well as a six from Darcey, giving her 27 points and placing her joint second with Caroline.

Frankie Sandford, Caroline Flack and Scott Mills look terrified ahead of Strictly debuts

The Strictly Come Dancing hopefuls looked rather anxious as they gear up for their debuts on the BBC show

Oh dear you can literally see the fear on this lots’ faces, can’t you?

Three of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing hopefulsFrankie Sandford, Caroline Flack and Scott Mills – were seen leaving the BBC radio studios, looking simply terrified.

The celebs are gearing up to take to the dance floor for the first time – either this evening or on Saturday.

WENNRadio 1
It’s OK Frankie, they’re not going to bite

And we’re guessing by the looks on their faces that it’s their go tonight.

Taking to Twitter following her first camera rehearsal Frankie, who is dancing with Kevin Clifton, she wrote: “1st camera rehearsal done for @bbcstrictly phew!! So scary actually doing it in front of people! all tanned up and on my way home.”

Caroline, who will be dancing with Pasha Kovalev, also tweeted: “Off to Strictly to DO strictly… Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. ‘Remind me to step on the 2!!!! Oh goddddd xxx.”

WENNRadio 1
Caroline looked determined

Frankie’s first dance will be a waltz to Someone Like You, while Caroline is doing the cha cha to The Jacksons’ Can You Feel It.

Caroline recently admitted the intense training sessions have been a lot tougher than she thought they would be.

She exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “It’s much harder than I thought.

“I’m really high on dance right now. That’s all I’ve been thinking about and I love it.”

*Concerned looks*

The 34-year-old beauty insists people shouldn’t bet on her to win the show just yet and has tipped Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills to do well in the competition.

She added: “I’ve only seen Scott dance and he was brilliant.

“I wouldn’t put any money on me get though – no one has seen me dance!”

Scott returned the compliment, insisting Caroline is one to watch on the show, and insisted he isn’t worried about getting any stick from tough judge Craig Revel Horwood.

He said: “The training has been really tough. I think Caroline could do really well, I watched her today and she was brilliant.”

Scott Mills, the Radio 1 DJ, hopes he won’t disappoint his dancing partner Joanne Clifton in the competition

Scott Mills: My Strictly Come Dancing partner says I can’t walk

Scott Mills, the Radio 1 DJ, hopes he won’t disappoint his dancing partner Joanne Clifton in the competition

While Scott Mills, the Radio 1 DJ, isn’t too set on winning this year’sStrictly Come Dancing, he is hoping he won’t disappoint his dancing partner Joanne Clifton, who is a new addition to the series.

“Joanne is really determined because her brother Kevin is also a dancer on Strictly, so she just wants to beat him,” he tells Mandrake. “Unfortunately her brother has Frankie Sandford from The Saturdays who looks really good.” Things haven’t got off to the best start for Mills. “I’ve been told by Joanne I’m not walking properly,” he says.

Clean slate

ITV’s Cilla Black biopic which stars Sheridan Smith has reinvigorated the nation’s love for the Liverpudlian singer. Now, her fellow 60s musician Billy J Kramer hopes it will do the same for their manager Brian Epstein, played by Ed Stoppard in the mini-series.

The 71-year-old singer is concerned that tales about Epstein’s homosexuality have overshadowed his good work. “Brian was great to work with so I do feel bad because stuff has come out in the press,” Kramer tells me ahead of his headline slot on the Solid Silver 60s Show in March. “He was a great bloke. When I performed at the London Palladium for the first time he brought my parents down from Liverpool and put them in Grosvenor House for a week. Then when my dad passed away he would be calling up my mum to check she was OK.”

Soft touch

With Eddie Redmayne planning a winter wedding to his fiancée Hannah Bagshawe, their apartment at least will be sunny all year long.

The 32-year-old Birdsong actor has decorated his London flat with some Mediterranean inspiration after a trip to Positano, on the Amalfi Coast. “There is a little boutique where my girlfriend and I bought pillows to recreate Positano in our apartment,” he says.

Redmayne announced his engagement to his girlfriend of three years in June. The couple’s decision to have the wedding in December is down to the musical tastes of their families. “We are all fans of the hymn In The Bleak Midwinter and wanted an excuse to sing that at a wedding.”

Scott Mills spills the beans on Strictly Come Dancing 2014

The one, the only, Mr Scott Mills (Picture: BBC)

It’s been a whole three weeks since the launch show, but now, finally, it’s time to don your sequined onesie, because the Strictly Come Dancing 2014 live shows are hitting our screens *scream*

And in anticipation of what’s sure to be one of the best Strictly’s yet, we caught up with BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills to get all the back stage gossip.

He may be a self-professed dancing novice, ‘I’ve never danced a step in my life. I just don’t do it. Not at all. Ever’, but Scott was keen to tell us that he was picking up his first routine surprisingly well.

And that, of course, is all down to his professional partner Joanne Clifton, who Scott told us were putting him through his paces: ‘I’m training twice a day – before and after my show – it’s mental. Joanne is trying to teach me to move like a dancer, so sometimes comes round and taps my knees when I’m not standing right.’

It seems that Joanne may still have a bit of work to do to get Scott up to speed though. He told us, ‘someone mentioned an American smooth. It sounds like a coffee.’

He may not know his American smooth from his skinny cappuccino, but Scott does know one thing – the Latin dances aren’t for him: ‘I can tell you, I don’t have sexy hips. There’s a bit of hip in my first routine, and it’s not for me. I mean, I’ve never moved my hip in that way… as I found out the next morning.’

And of course we couldn’t let Scott go without getting some gossip about his Strictly rivals.

The glittering Strictly Come Dancing 2014 line up (Picture: BBC/Ray Burmiston)

With pop Princesses Pixie Lott and Frankie from The Saturdays on the line up, you might be surprised to hear that Scott’s one to watch is none other than former TOWIE lothario Mark Wright: ‘Mark is like, “Tell you what mate, tell you what Millsy, me and you, same boat, can’t do it can we?

‘Marky now moves, that’s what all my mates in Essex call me”. But I don’t believe him. He’s just one of those people who can just do it. And he’s got Karen as well, and she’s really good.’

So there you have it – sexy hips, spanking and Mark Wright for the win. Bring. It. On.

Earlier she tweeted: “This is what the tape is for and I’m not takin it off til you get those hands right Mills!”

Joanne has added that her and Scott are getting on really well in rehearsals and that she is enjoying the whole experience.
